Key takeaways
- Odoo 20 needs Python 3.12 or later and PostgreSQL 16 or later, up from Python 3.10 and PostgreSQL 13 for Odoo 19.
- Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 13 meet the new minimums out of the box. Older releases such as Ubuntu 22.04 and Debian 12 do not.
- Odoo's AI features need the pgvector extension in PostgreSQL, and use Odoo's paid AI credits.
- Plan the move on a new server next to your current one, and test the upgrade on a copy first.
Odoo 20 at a glance
Odoo released version 20 in September 2026. Odoo's support pages list September 2029 as the planned end of standard support for 20.0 (as of October 2026). Most of the release is about features, such as AI agents and changes to accounting, but several changes affect where and how Odoo runs. Those are the focus here. For the feature list itself, see Odoo's own Odoo 20 release notes.
Odoo 20 system requirements
Python 3.12 or later
Odoo's source installation guide for 20.0 sets the minimum Python version at 3.12 (as of October 2026). Odoo 19 needed 3.10. If your server's system Python is older, Odoo 20 will not run on it, and installing a newer Python by hand on an old distribution is rarely worth the trouble.
PostgreSQL 16 or later
The same guide sets the minimum PostgreSQL version at 16, up from 13 for Odoo 19. Many Odoo 18 and 19 servers still run PostgreSQL 13, 14 or 15, so the database server usually has to be upgraded or replaced as part of the move.
Moving to a newer PostgreSQL
There are two common ways to get your data onto PostgreSQL 16 or later:
- Restore a backup on a new server. An Odoo backup contains a database dump, which can be restored into a newer PostgreSQL version. This is the simplest route when you are building a new server for Odoo 20 anyway.
- Upgrade PostgreSQL in place with PostgreSQL's own upgrade tools. This avoids moving data, but it is riskier on a production server and needs a tested backup first.
Either way, do it on a copy first and time it, so you know how long the real migration window needs to be.
Which operating systems work
The distribution's own Python and PostgreSQL decide what fits:
- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS ships Python 3.12 and PostgreSQL 16, so it meets both minimums. Odoo's own 20.0 Debian package targets it.
- Debian 13 (Trixie) ships newer versions of both, and works too.
- Ubuntu 22.04 and Debian 12 ship older versions, so they are not a good base for Odoo 20.
If your Odoo 18 or 19 server runs an older release, the cleanest path is a new server on Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 13, rather than upgrading the operating system in place under a running Odoo.
Odoo 20 AI features and pgvector
Odoo 20's AI features, including AI agents, rely on the pgvector extension for PostgreSQL. Odoo's installation guide says pgvector is required if you want to use the AI features, and that it needs PostgreSQL 15 or later. Without it, those features cannot be used.
Two more points matter for hosting:
- Credits. Odoo's release notes say all AI features now need credits, bought through Odoo's in-app purchase service, and its documentation says AI requests go through that service.
- Data flow. Because AI requests leave your server, include them in your data protection review. Our guide to Odoo hosting, data residency and GDPR explains what to check.
If you plan to use the AI features, check that pgvector is installed on your PostgreSQL server, or ask your host whether it is available, before you upgrade.
PDF reports and wkhtmltopdf
Odoo still renders PDF reports with wkhtmltopdf. Newer distributions, including Debian 13 and Ubuntu 26.04, no longer include it in their package archives. On those systems, install the upstream build from the wkhtmltopdf packaging project instead, and print a test invoice to check that headers and footers appear. Our guide to self-hosting Odoo Community covers the rest of the installation.
Upgrading to Odoo 20: what to plan
Custom and OCA modules
Every custom module needs a 20.0 version, and OCA modules take time to be migrated after each release. Check that every module you depend on exists for 20.0 before choosing a date; our guide to installing OCA modules explains how branches work.
Functional changes
Some changes affect how people work, not just the server. Odoo's release notes list, for example, changes to how charts of accounts are structured and features removed from Payroll. Have the people who use those areas review the upgraded copy before you go live.
The upgrade itself
The process is the same as for any major version: port the modules, run a test upgrade on a copy of production, let users test it, then cut over with a rollback plan. Our Odoo 18 to 19 upgrade guide walks through each step, and they apply to 20 as well.
A new server, not an in-place change
Because Odoo 20 usually needs a newer operating system and PostgreSQL, build a new server for it and keep the current one running until the new version has worked well for a while. That gives you a simple way back.
Should you move to Odoo 20 now?
- Move soon if you are starting a new project, need the new features, or your current version is close to the end of its support.
- Wait a few months if you rely on many OCA or third-party modules that are not yet available for 20.0, or have heavy customisation that needs porting.
Either way, testing an upgrade on a copy costs little and tells you how much work the real move will be.
Odoo 20 hosting on CloudPilot
- Odoo 20 is supported, Community and Enterprise, alongside Odoo 18 and 19.
- Supported operating systems for Odoo 20 are Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13 and Ubuntu 26.04 for servers you connect over SSH. Servers CloudPilot creates in your cloud account use Ubuntu 24.04.
- wkhtmltopdf handled. On Debian 13 and Ubuntu 26.04, CloudPilot installs the upstream patched-Qt build automatically.
- One Odoo version per server, so you add an Odoo 20 server next to your current one, restore a backup onto it as a new instance, and test before you switch the domain.
See managed Odoo hosting for what CloudPilot looks after and pricing for each plan.
Odoo 20 hosting: questions
What are the system requirements for Odoo 20?
Odoo's 20.0 source installation guide lists Python 3.12 or later and PostgreSQL 16 or later. The pgvector extension is also needed if you want to use the AI features.
Can I run Odoo 20 on Ubuntu 22.04?
Not with the distribution's own packages: Ubuntu 22.04 ships Python and PostgreSQL versions older than Odoo 20's minimums. Use Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 13 instead.
Do Odoo 20's AI features cost extra?
According to Odoo's release notes, all AI features need credits, bought through Odoo's in-app purchase service. They also need the pgvector extension in PostgreSQL.
