Key takeaways
- Cloud storage pricing for standard object storage is about $0.02 per GB per month at AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, and under $0.01 per GB at Backblaze B2 and Wasabi (as of November 2026).
- 30 daily backups of a 5 GB Odoo database is about 150 GB, or roughly $1 to $3.50 a month depending on the provider and class.
- Cheaper "cool" classes have minimum storage durations. Match them to your retention, or you pay for days you never keep.
- Restores cost money too: check download (egress) fees, not only the price per GB stored.
Cloud storage pricing for Odoo backups comes down to three numbers: the price per GB per month, the minimum time each file is billed for, and the cost of downloading a backup when you need to restore. As of November 2026, standard object storage costs $0.020 to $0.023 per GB per month at the three big clouds, and less at specialist providers. For most Odoo databases, that is a few dollars a month.
How big are Odoo backups?
A full Odoo backup is a zip file with the database dump and the filestore, which holds attachments, images and documents. The filestore is often larger than the database itself. A small company's backup might be 1 to 5 GB; a database with years of scanned invoices and product images can be 50 GB or more.
Each scheduled backup is a full copy, so the storage you pay for is roughly:
backup size × backups per day × days of retention
A 5 GB backup taken daily and kept for 30 days is about 150 GB. Keep it for 7 days and it is about 35 GB. Retention is the biggest lever on your backup storage cost.
Cloud storage pricing compared
These are list prices for the first tier of storage, in USD, as of November 2026. We took them from each provider's own pricing page or price list, for one common region. Prices vary by region, and large volumes get lower rates.
| Provider and class | Price per GB-month | Minimum storage duration |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon S3 Standard (US East) | $0.023 | None |
| Amazon S3 Standard-IA (US East) | $0.0125 | 30 days |
| Azure Blob Hot, LRS (East US) | $0.0208 | None |
| Azure Blob Cool, LRS (East US) | $0.0152 | 30 days |
| Azure Blob Cold, LRS (East US) | $0.0036 | 90 days |
| Google Cloud Storage Standard (Iowa) | $0.020 | None |
| Google Cloud Storage Nearline (Iowa) | $0.010 | 30 days |
| Google Cloud Storage Coldline (Iowa) | $0.004 | 90 days |
| Backblaze B2 | $6.95 per TB (about $0.007 per GB) | None |
| Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage | From $7.99 per TB (about $0.008 per GB) | See Wasabi's pricing FAQ |
Google lists its storage prices per GiB, per hour; the monthly figures above are those hourly rates over a 730-hour month. Archive classes (S3 Glacier, Azure Archive, Google Archive) are cheaper still, but their long minimum durations and slow retrieval make them a poor fit for backups you may need to restore today.
S3 pricing per GB, and the other S3-compatible options
Amazon S3 Standard costs $0.023 per GB per month for the first 50 TB in US East (N. Virginia), according to AWS's price list. S3 Standard-Infrequent Access is $0.0125, but it has a 30-day minimum, and AWS charges $0.01 per GB when you read data back.
Because S3's API is a de facto standard, many other providers accept the same tools. Backblaze B2 starts at $6.95 per TB per month, with the first 10 GB free and free egress up to three times your average stored data. Wasabi lists pay-as-you-go storage from $7.99 per TB per month, with no fees for egress or API requests. Both have their own conditions, so read their pricing pages before you commit.
Azure and Google Cloud storage pricing
Azure Blob Storage Hot tier with locally redundant storage (LRS) costs $0.0208 per GB per month in East US for the first 50 TB, according to Azure's retail price list. Cool is $0.0152 and Cold is $0.0036. Google Cloud Storage Standard in Iowa works out to about $0.020 per GB per month, Nearline to $0.010 and Coldline to $0.004.
Choosing a cooler tier is tempting, but read the small print first. Azure states it plainly:
"Blobs are subject to an early deletion penalty if they are deleted, overwritten or moved to a different tier before the minimum number of days required by the tier have transpired."
How minimum storage durations affect backup storage cost
A minimum storage duration means each file is billed for at least that many days, even if you delete it sooner. Amazon S3 Standard-IA, Azure Cool and Google Nearline bill at least 30 days. Azure Cold and Google Coldline bill at least 90 days.
Now take a daily backup kept for 7 days on Google Coldline. Each backup is deleted on day 7 but billed for 90 days, so you pay for almost 13 times the storage you actually keep. At $0.004 per GB, that is more than Standard storage at $0.020 with no minimum.
A simple rule:
- Retention under 30 days: use a standard or hot class, or a provider with no minimum, such as Backblaze B2.
- Retention of 30 to 89 days: a 30-day class (S3 Standard-IA, Azure Cool, Google Nearline) usually saves money.
- Monthly backups kept for a year or more: a 90-day class can make sense for that schedule alone.
A worked example: 150 GB of Odoo backups
A 5 GB backup, taken daily and kept for 30 days, needs about 150 GB. At the list prices above, before request and download fees:
- Amazon S3 Standard: about $3.45 a month.
- Azure Blob Hot (LRS): about $3.12 a month.
- Google Cloud Storage Standard: about $3.00 a month.
- Azure Blob Cool (LRS): about $2.28 a month.
- Amazon S3 Standard-IA: about $1.88 a month.
- Google Cloud Storage Nearline: about $1.50 a month.
- Backblaze B2: about $1 a month.
The differences are small in dollars. What matters more is where the backups live: in a different account, and ideally a different provider, from the server they protect. Our Odoo backup strategy guide explains why.
Don't forget restore costs
Storing a backup is only half the cost; restoring it means downloading it. AWS includes 100 GB of data transfer out to the internet free each month, across all services, then charges per GB. Azure and Google Cloud also bill internet egress per GB. Backblaze B2 includes egress up to three times your stored data, and Wasabi charges no egress fees. The cool classes add retrieval charges on top.
For a 5 GB backup, a restore costs cents at any provider. It matters more for large filestores, or if you regularly copy production to staging from offsite storage.
What about SFTP?
SFTP has no price per GB of its own. You pay for the server or storage box at the other end, usually a flat monthly fee for a fixed amount of disk. It suits companies that already own a backup server or NAS, or that want backups in a specific building or country. You also take on keeping that server patched, monitored and big enough.
How CloudPilot uses the storage you choose
CloudPilot backs up the Odoo database and filestore in Odoo's standard backup format, on a schedule with a retention in days, and deletes expired backups automatically. A new schedule defaults to a daily backup at 02:00 with 7 days of retention, which you can change.
- Starter includes automated daily backups in CloudPilot storage, with one schedule per instance.
- Pro adds backups to your own storage: any S3-compatible service (such as Amazon S3, Akamai/Linode, Wasabi or MinIO), Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage or SFTP.
- Business adds advanced backup control, with multiple schedules per instance and instance templates.
CloudPilot uploads to the bucket or container you choose and does not pick a storage class, so the bucket's own default class applies. Set that default, or a lifecycle rule, to match your retention. See Backups, offsite storage and restores for the setup, managed Odoo hosting for what CloudPilot looks after and pricing for each plan.
Cloud storage pricing for backups: questions
How much does offsite backup storage cost for Odoo?
Usually a few dollars a month. 30 daily backups of a 5 GB Odoo database is about 150 GB, which costs roughly $1 to $3.50 a month at list prices, depending on the provider and storage class (as of November 2026).
What is S3 pricing per GB?
Amazon S3 Standard costs $0.023 per GB per month for the first 50 TB in US East (N. Virginia), and S3 Standard-IA costs $0.0125 per GB with a 30-day minimum storage duration (as of November 2026).
Which storage class is best for Odoo backups?
Match the class to your retention. For backups kept under 30 days, use a standard class or a provider without a minimum duration. For 30 to 89 days, a 30-day class such as S3 Standard-IA or Google Nearline is usually cheaper.
